Last Friday, me and my co-worker decided to go for a walk around downtown Columbus during our lunch hour. We totally forgot about the fact that a ton of people would be in our path because of Red White & Boom, but it ended up playing in our favor. As we walked down the street, I spotted something that I had been looking forward to since I first heard about it: The Cheesy Truck. It was kind of hard to miss since it is perhaps the happiest looking food truck I have seen. I spotted the nearest ATM and then got in line to finally try this truck that had been haunting my dreams.
I was greeted by a man whose demeanor matched the exterior of the truck. He was grinning ear to ear and peppered his conversation with lots of “dears”. Come to find out, this was the owner of the truck and he obviously has a lot of enthusiasm for what he’s doing. It always makes me happy to see someone doing just what they want to do, and this man definitely falls into that category.
I ordered off what I now know was an abbreviated menu. Totally understandable considering where I found them. I got the Boarding School which was cheddar on white bread (the cheddar was a slight up charge) and tater tots. After a relatively short amount of time, my name was called and I was on my way back to my office with my two bags of food that I was super excited about.
Well, I kind have a bone to pick with The Cheesy Truck about their packaging. Halfway to my office, the bag containing the tater tots could no longer hold the greasy goodness. It ripped to the point that I was forced to carry the very hot food from the bottom. Not fun and a little painful. Maybe consider upgrading from the bags you are using?
Once I did get to my office, I dug in. The grilled cheese sandwich was definitely good. But when eating a grilled cheese sandwich, I’m looking for a crunch and that wasn’t there. Perhaps it was because I had to carry it a few blocks, but it was a little on the soggy side. The tater tots were good, but I kind of regretted not getting the special sauce that they offered. Perhaps that might have made the tots hit the great status.
Overall, it was a really positive experience and I look forward to trying The Cheesy Truck again under more ideal circumstances. I think they’re really on to something here and are on their way to being the hit of the summer.
P.S. I know I suck for not taking pictures. I’m still getting used to the idea that I’m writing a blog and therefore, should take pictures of the stuff I do. I promise to get better at this, especially when I’m writing about food.
